Description:       When Gatchaman finally hit DVD, it hit hard. This time out longtime Tatsunoko partner Nippon Columbia headed up the releases. They again decided on a 27 volume total, but instead of a massive box set, they chose to release their titles over the course of a year.

Two to three Gatchaman volumes were released at fairly regular intervals from May 2000 to June 2001. Only two months were skipped in between each of the three "legs" in which the discs came.

Instead of standard DVD cases, Tatsunoko opted for CD-like jewel cases. The first two DVD volumes contained three episodes each, while volumes 3 through 26 contained four episodes each and Volume 27 had the final three episodes. Each volume contained full color sixteen-page information booklets. The data contained over the full run of the booklets was impressive, and included production techniques, interviews with main staff and cast, a lot of previously-unknown trivia information, additional support cast names, model sheet drawings and merchandise came to light.

The discs themselves contained the best looking version of the Gatchaman episodes that we've been treated to yet. There were still problems with some episodes, but generally they were better looking that the LaserDiscs. As was the standard, each episode was presented complete, along with its correct preview trailer. Chapter markers on these releases were similar to the LaserDiscs, including opening credits, Parts A and B of the story, closing credits and the preview trailer.

To encourage buyers to keep up with the releases, Nippon Columbia offered mail-in premiums after each leg. The first offer was for a "G" pin. The second offer was for a Bird Head pin. The third offer was the most impressive; first for a limited-edition CD pressing of the Gatchaman Anime Sound Memorial LP, which contained a compilation of Gatchaman music (all available commercially on other CDs) and a limited-edition DVD pressing of the Gatchaman Feature Film. Additionally, if buyers of the first eight DVDs purchased them at a store named Ishimaru, they could have their receipts stamped in order to receive an exclusive "G" logo cloisonne pin. Extras on the DVD content from the first two legs of the releases weren't as impressive as they could have been, consisting mainly of slideshows from the episodes included on each particular volume, set to background music score selections, full versions of the opening and closing themes and karaoke versions of the opening and closing theme songs. But the third leg picked up for DVD bonus materials, including slideshows of rare sketches, cel setups, background paintings, merchandise photos, and model sheet drawings.

The final volume contained some Tatsunoko commercials, video variations of the Gatchaman closing credit sequence, more merchandise photos and most impressively, the entire content of the initial 1984 Victor Gatchaman VHS release. Monaural
